AGGRESSIVE PATIENT – DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPY

Summary:


Agression is a complex problem in an emergency setting. Agression is a symptom of a psychiatric but also a medical disorder and it is important to differentiate the cause of agression. Treatment of agressive patients demands, beside the medical knowledge, skilled and trained medical staff who is able to calm the patient and prevent the escalation of agressive behaviour, taking into consideration the safety of the patient and the staff. Manifestations of agression and evaluation of agresssive behaviour and diagnostic algorhytms are described. In the treatment of agressive behaviour it is necessary to determine therapeutic goals. The specific techniques for reducing agression (verbal de-escalation, medication and seclusion and restraint) are discussed in detail.
